I have a Canon MX490 that isn't in the drop down list, can anyone help to set it up
Chromebook detected the printer on the network, but when I try to print, it doesn't. So when I edit the printer settings to Manufacturer, the printer isn't in the drop down box. I can't find an emulation, generic, or printer language setting that works either. The system says that the document printed, but the printer never responds to the commands

The bad news
I have checked the Chrome OS native printing database myself and I am afraid that I can confirm that there is no Chrome OS native printing support for your Canon Pixma MX490 (that includes generic driver support).
The specifications for the Canon Pixma MX490 states that your printer supports Google Cloud Print. For further information, see page 83 of the (Windows) online user manual. Don't worry that manual is for the Windows operating system: in theory at least you should be able to use the information in it for preparing Google Cloud Print for use with a Chromebook.
Google Cloud Print (GCP) has moved on to version 2.0 and unfortunately if your printer doesn't have a 'V2' next to its name indicating that it already supports GCP version 2.0 then I believe that you won't be able to upgrade the firmware to support GCP version 2.0.
Any queries about Google Cloud Print should be addressed to Canon Support.
The bottom line
Assuming that everything I've said here checks out, if you still want to print from a Chromebook then you will probably need to consider purchasing a new printer after carefully checking out its Chromebook compatibility.
You should look for at least one of the following Chromebook-compatible print methods:
  • HP ePrint
  • Chrome OS native printing
  • HP Print for Chrome
and ensure that the printer can be configured/connected (final target connection = LAN/router) by at least one of the following methods:
  • from its control panel (you can't do this with the most basic panel type).
  • partially configured from the control panel in order to access the web browser based printer management tool built into the printer. The printer control panel should therefore be capable of activating a WPS or Wi-Fi direct connection in order to gain access to the web browser based printer management tool.
  • an ethernet socket (giving access to the printer management tool via an immediate automatic printer connection).
It is worth pointing out that HP ePrint and HP Print for Chrome are exclusive to HP printers/MFPs and network ready printers have by far the greatest level of Chrome OS support. Unfortunately the lowest Chrome OS compatibility brands appears to Canon and Brother. Where compatibility is concerned, the best brand appears to be HP. Nevertheless it is quite possible to purchase HP models that just won't work with Chromebooks. For example you need to steer clear of USB-only models and models with primitive control panels. Just do solid research and you should be OK.

That's a great explanation, Terence. You have documented the sad state of Canon printer support, and shown why most of us recommend using HP or Epson printers.

Quote: The other way is to direct connect to printer
With respect, that statement could be misleading for others:
  1. There are no Chromebook-compatible print methods (i.e. Google Cloud Print or Chrome OS CUPS or TTBOMK any Mobile solutions for Chromebooks that support Android), that will work with a USB-connected Canon Pixma MX490.
  2. The Canon Pixma MX490 doesn't support Wireless Direct or Wi-Fi Direct.
    Even if that were true:
    • Google Cloud Print will not work with direct wireless connections.
    • There is no current Chrome OS CUPS support for the Canon Pixma MX490.

Google must take most of the blame for Google Cloud Print being 'disabled' (see footnote) as you describe it but Canon must take a smaller proportion of the blame. I have already explained most of this in my first reply in this thread, in the section titled 'Or just more bad news?'. Now expanding the topic specifically for you, I have checked personally and I can definitely confirm that Canon have issued no Pixma MX490 firmware updates for any operating system that might allow you to upgrade to Google Cloud Print version 2.0 if your MX490 is currently stranded on version 1.
Footnote
Google must take the lion's share of the blame for the Google Cloud Print mess as follows:
  1. By deciding that Google Cloud Print (GCP) version 1 wasn't good enough and moving the goalposts for all manufacturers who had produced printers with GCP version 1 installed, by releasing GCP version 2 and dropping support for GCP version 1.
  2. By deciding that GCP version 2 wasn't good enough and deciding to replace it with CUPS (Chrome OS CUPS setup is described here) and dropping all support for GCP version 2 by the end of 2020.
It is a pity that Google didn't manage to maintain print method backward compatibility, but without Google insider knowledge there is nothing else I can say.

@ Deborah Shipley
First of all: my compliments for stating the make and model of your printer. It makes printing problem analysis so much easier.
My apologies for not being able to figure out which Chromebook print method you have been using with your Canon Pixma MG3222:
  1. Your MG3222 does not support Google Cloud Print.
  2. Your MG322 is not supported by Chrome OS native printing (AKA CUPS).
... so I can't offer you any suggestions concerning a fix.
Before purchasing a new printer/MFP, check that it is Chromebook-compatible as follows:
  1. Make absolutely certain that is supported by Chrome OS CUPS by following the guidelines summarised in this Google Doc.
  2. If you are considering a network capable printer/MFP (recommended) then make absolutely certain that it either has an ethernet socket or a control panel on the printer/MFP which can used to configure its wireless connection. If there is no ethernet socket then you must avoid the most basic type of control panel which doesn't allow you to configure the wireless connection because you won't be able to carry out the initial wireless configuration in that situation from your Chromebook. If you select a printer/MFP with the most advanced type of control panel (don't expect to find them on budget models) then wireless setup should be a walk in the park.
General comments about makes
  1. HP: At the moment HP still represents the most Chromebook-compatible make and you will be in the very strongest position if you select an HP printer/MFP that also supports HP Print for Chrome (refer to this database to find out which models are supported) HP ePrint and HP WebScan.
    ● You are strongly advised to avoid re-branded Samsung models sold under the HP brand (these are listed in this HP printer forum post which I submitted under the JBL11 pseudonym).
  2. Epson: This is widely considered to be the second most Chromebook-compatible make.
General Comments about USB-only printers/MFPs
  1. Biggest limitation: can only be used by the computer connected to it by cable (a ball and chain for any Chromebook).
  2. Cheaper to buy but in general: they are lower spec; relatively few models have Chromebook print support; direct methods of scanning from a USB-only MFP to a Chromebook are currently impossible (that is until Linux (Beta) gets comprehensive USB device support).
General comments about printer/MFP user manuals
At several points in this post I have referred to information that you may only be able to find in official user guides for the printer/MFP concerned, e.g. 'make absolutely certain that it either has an ethernet socket or a control panel on the printer/MFP which can used to configure its wireless connection'. In such cases the easiest thing to do is to carry out a Google search on the printer model name followed by 'user guide'. It is then up to you to separate the wheat from the chaff in the search results.
HP LaserJet Pro MFP M148fdw user guide
Example selected search result (with hyperlink to target):
HP LaserJet Pro MFP M148fdw Manuals HP® Customer Support
Example user guide selection (with hyperlink to target):
In the specific case of this example well-specified printer, if you wished to get started by configuring a wireless connection, you would need to refer to page 116 of the user guide in the section titled 'Manually configure IPv4 TCP/IP parameters from the control panel'. Unfortunately I have selected a difficult-to-use example user guide that would provoke some to throw the printed version at the wall within a week.

After trying so hard to get my printer to connect to this chromebook, I thought I was missing a step. I tried updating the firmware (negative), kept saying not connected to the internet (which it was), I turned it off and even disconnected it from the chromebook. I went to my desktop to make sure it was really on the network, and voila it works.
I guess it is just bad news bears... Canon and Chrome just do NOT mingle. But nonetheless, I am happy to know that it isn't just the girl tech and I am not crazy....
This would make for a good story for my fellow tech classmates... Lol.

Today, 04/16/20 I was able to update the firmware on my Canon MX492 and then get the option to set up CloudPrint. Menu-Web service setup-Connection setup-Google Cloud Print-Register w/service-Yes. It will print a page with a URL or a QR code to go to I finish the printer registration. It worked for my Chromebook.
I still cannot setup my printer via USB as the model doesn’t pop up and there isn’t a PPD for it. Also I installed the printer via its IP address but the print jobs never succeed.
